A spotting scope is a sure way to open new birding opportunities for you. Whether you observe in the great wide open or locally at your city park, a spotting scope will add a new dimension to your birding. If you anticipate any field use of the scope, investing in a waterproof scope would save you a lot of hassle. Hardcore birders also appreciate strong construction and preferably nitrogen filled optics so they won't fog up.. .22 scopes are designed to be parallax free at a shorter distance (usually 75 yards) than scopes designed for centerfire rifles, since they will be used for small targets at comparatively short range, instead of large targets at long range. A good .22 scope does need to have accurate internal adjustments and high quality optics.. After decades of reading the popular gun and outdoor magazines, I have become convinced that most gun writers have little real knowledge about optics, although they may know just enough to impress most of their readers. As you will read below, it is much easier for scope companies to sell magnification, which most consumers already understand, than to educate potential customers about the other, often more important, attributes of telescopic sights..

What is the primary purpose of using the binoculars ? . · Best near focus capability of any type telescope. Several companies have also copied the Weaver bases and rings, and their rings and bases should interchange with Weaver bases and rings. The Tasco supplied rings I have used on pistol sights, for instance, mate perfectly to Weaver bases..

This article is aimed at helping you understand night vision devices. By understanding the different types of scopes including passive starlight, active starlight, active infrared, image intensifier along with combination systems and the principles involved, you should feel confident when it comes to purchasing a night vision device - be it for recreation, sport or surveillance purposes.. · Reasonably compact and portable. Uses of spotting scopes. · Refracting telescope, and. Combination Systems. One of the biggest changes has been the emergence, and then the domination, of the variable power scope. Advanced, computer assisted, optical design and multi layer anti-reflection coatings have made this possible. The traditional 2.5x, 2.75x, and 3x scopes have nearly disappeared. They have been supplanted by the 1-3x, 1-4x, and 1.5-6x variable scopes..

Acquiring all of the necessary equipment to excel at hunting, bird watching and backpacking can really set you back a few dollars. You want the best gear, but sometimes you are forced to give in to budgetary constraints. There are times that you get lucky and can get top optical spotting scopes for less than you expect to pay.. Spotting scopes are perfectly suited for activities like long distance bird watching and nature study, telephotography, hunting, scenic observing, long distance microscopy, beginning astronomy and surveillance. Depending on the type and design of the spotting scope, the magnification can range from about 10X to 250X, using either fixed or zoom eyepieces. Whether you use it to identify a trophy buck at long range, observe migrating crane in the winters or spot bullet groups at the range, a spotting scope will augment your pleasure in the outdoors.. One mil is actually measured from the crosshair to the center of the first mil dot. You want to break that down into .10th's. The round mildot is .20th of a mil If your target is half way between the cross hairs and the first mil dot the mil reading would be .5 mils. If it is from the crosshairs to the bottom edge of the first mil dot it is .9 mils. From the crosshairs to the top edge of the second mil dot would be 2.1 mils..

A 1-4x variable needs only a 20mm objective at maximum power for a 5mm exit pupil. Set that scope to 2.85x and you have a 7mm exit pupil for shooting in the dead of night (assuming your eyes are perfect and can actually make use of that big an exit pupil).. · First-rate for deep sky observing or astrophotography with fast films or CCD's. Your scope is dying, and you can't save it. Perhaps due to the enthusiastic advertising over the years, many of us have fallen into the trap of believing that a rifle or pistol scope is maintenance free, or is somehow not a wearing part. It is decidedly both..

· Easier to aim for beginners. Many things affect both the quality and the price of any optical sight. These include optical considerations like the type of glass and the number of elements selected for lens groups, the design of the eyepieces, the care taken in grinding, polishing, and centering the glass elements, the type and coverage of anti-reflection coatings, the sharpness and contrast of the entire optical system, and how effectively aberrations (always present) are controlled.. Fixed magnification scopes still have important advantages when compared to variable power models. In scopes of the same quality and maximum magnification, a fixed power scope is optically superior. It is also simpler in design and construction, and therefore more durable. The fixed power scope is easier to seal against water and dust. It is usually lighter and more compact than a variable power scope. And fixed power scopes are less expensive than equivalent quality variable power scopes. For all of these reasons a fixed power scope may be a better choice than a variable power scope, depending on the application.. Other factors to consider would be the image and it's quality. There are several things to think about in this regard. It's just vital that the optics deliver as much light as possible to the eyepiece. The more light you have to work with, the sharper the resolution and eventually the shot. This is one reason why larger objective lens scopes (50mm) have become more popular recently, as the larger the light gathering capability, the more you have to work with. Lens quality is a huge issue, too, and can be detected by any distortion visible around the edges. Lens coatings are applied to quality optics to reduce reflection causing glare and help gather light for a crisper, brighter image. Don't buy a lens that's not at least multi-coated.. This little article may sound a bit depressing, but colleague Alan Orr has passed on a few "Boy Scout's Motto" tips that have saved many a hunt in times past. Consider taking an extra scope along for insurance, as even the world's finest cars have spare tires. It is not the "best idea" to wait until you the day before you leave for a hunt to evaluate your scope. It is just good practice to check your scope before every season. The combination of humidity and wooden stocks can often simulate the symptoms of a bad scope. It is also good idea to periodically check your gun's action screws and bedding.. Magnification and field of view are somewhat opposite traits, as the more you magnify something, the smaller the field of view becomes. However, some lenses can take in more of the total area magnified, such that the image is still very large despite being magnified. Some binoculars provide something akin to tunnel vision, whereas others give a much wider range, similar to your own eyes. If you are looking for binoculars for astronomy, then you need a lot of magnification with little field of view. If you are going to use your binoculars to watch sports, you will want a wide field of view without a great deal of magnification..

· Limited practical usefulness. Since field of view is measured in degrees, the closer the shooter is to the target, the smaller the actual area he sees through his scope. Field of view is inversely proportional to magnification. For these reasons, the woods hunter or someone who may have to shoot at running game needs a lower power scope because it provides a bigger field of view. For example, a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x variable power scope has a linear field of 32.3 feet at 100 yards when set at 3x, but only 14.0 feet at 9x.. Redfield was one of the pioneers in the telescopic sight business, and before that they made precision aperture (iron) sights for both target shooters and hunters. Redfield, which used to made in Colorado, was a top line (four-star) scope back in the early 1960's when I sold sporting goods. Years later Redfield fell on hard times, and the company changed hands several times. At one point Redfield scopes vanished from the marketplace. Scopes bearing the Redfield name have again appeared on dealer's shelves, and the "Golden Five Star" line qualifies for my three-star-plus category. The new Redfield scopes range from the middle to the deluxe price classes. Simmons, Weaver, and Redfield are all now owned by Meade Optical..

In roof prism binoculars the prisms overlap closely, allowing the objective lenses to line up directly with the eyepiece. The result is a slim, streamlined shape in which the lenses and prisms that magnify and correct the image are in a straight line.. Price . For operation in complete darkness, or in cases where extremely high image clarity is a requirement (emergency, police, military and surveillance), an infra red augmented device will be needed..

Full-size binoculars offer the greatest light gathering ability and over-all optical performance. Larger objective lenses and prism blocks allow for greater exit pupils, providing brighter, sharper image quality. Typical full-size configurations include the 7x35, 7x50, 8x40, and 10x40 models. . Many manufacturers sell "package guns" that include a scope, sling, and other trinkets with a new rifle. In my experience, the scopes that come with these deals are strictly for the birds. When pricing a new rifle, you would do well to ignore the scope on such guns and figure to maybe use it on a 22 for squirrels and such, and factor in roughly $200-$250 for a good scope. You can easily spend more than that amount for a good scope - prices for quality optics climb rapidly, even into the thousands - but it's not necessary to do so to get a good, serviceable scope.. Pentax is another name in the deluxe class that I must mention. I have had a considerable amount of experience with Pentax optical products, which I have used professionally and sold at the retail level, and I have found them to be very good. But, more by chance than design, I have never owned one of their telescopic sights.. Remember that everything is magnified when you look through a telescopic sight, including your own shakes and tremors. (This is particularly apparent with a scoped handgun.) The greater the magnification, the harder it seems to keep the image steady. 2, 3, or 4 power rifle scopes are easier for most people to sight through if the rifle is hand held (not being shot from a rest). The higher power scopes (or higher powered variable scopes) sound like a good deal, but often result in jiggly, blurred views and hard to find targets.. Like about 90% of all professional photographers, I have used Nikon cameras and lenses for a long time. I was what Nikon used to call an Advanced Systems Specialist when I was in the retail end of the photography business. So I have a long history with Nikon optical products, and a lot of respect for the company itself and the professional way they work with both their dealers and customers. When they introduced their line of Monarch scopes I was not surprised to find that they were among the best. Before long I was using a Nikon scope myself, a decision I have never regretted.. Everyone knows that retail stores hardly ever have the lowest priced products. Their mode of operation and the costs associated with running a store just don't allow them to offer good deals. When you want a Burris scope there are ways to shop smart so that you only pay the bare minimum..
